Speed Management
Speed management means knowing how fast to drive according to the:
- Stopping distance required
- Shape of the road
- Traffic flow
- Condition of the road surface
- Visibility conditions
Safe Following Distance
To avoid rear-end collisions, keep at least a 6-second-plus following distance when driving in ideal conditions. As your speed increases, and/or as driving conditions change, add 1 or more seconds.
Here is how to determine a safe following distance:
Know the length of your vehicle (feet) and your traveling speed.
For speeds below 40 MPH, use 1 second for each 10 feet of vehicle length.
For speeds above 40 MPH, use 1 second for each 10 feet of vehicle length, and add one more second.
Under certain conditions, always add more following distance:
- Add 1 second for each poor driving condition.
- Add 1 second for every 2 hours of driving time.
- Add a tailgater’s following distance to your following distance.
- Add an additional second for specified vehicles (over dimensional, doubles, tanks,
etc.).
It is important to remember the posted speed limit is the suggested speed limit when conditions are “ideal” and speed should always be adjusted according to conditions on the roadway.
